Mr. Putter & Tabby Smell the Roses by Cynthia Rylant

We currently have one very BIG fan of Mr. Putter & Tabby at our house.....so we have read them all.  Many. Many. Times!  In the newest in the series, Mr. Putter is excited to celebrate Mrs. Teaberry's birthday.  But he does not want to celebrate it the same way they have in the past!  Mr. Putter decides a perfect day for Mrs. Teaberry would be spent at the conservatory.  It is a perfect day until Zeke, often the cause of trouble on their adventures, sees a banana tree and assumes it is for HIM!

Ladybug Girl and the Dress-up Dilemma by David Soman

It is Halloween and Lulu has a MAJOR problem, she doesn't know what to dress up as.  She assumes she will dress up as Ladybug Girl but her brother thinks she has uses that costume one to many times.  She must decide tonight so she goes through a list of possibilities.  Robot?  Nope, too big to fit through the door.  Silent movie star?  How would she ask for candy?  Octopus?  Alien?  Wallaby?  Nothing seems to be the right choice.  Then she decides to be a vampire panda!  Her brother is not very supportive of this idea!  Will Lulu find the right costume before it is too late?  A great story just in time for Halloween costume picking season.  Any Ladybug Girl fan will want to add this one to their collection.

Just a Little Luck by Mercer Mayer

We have a BIG FAN of Little Critters books at our house so when I saw this at the library, I knew we have to check it out. Little Critter finds a penny on the ground but can not remember whether it was heads up or tails up. Little Critter thinks it must be tails up as he has a sting of bad luck: dropping ice cream, flat tire, falling off bike, school project ruined, etc. Little critter starts feeling pretty sorry for himself. On Saturday Grandpa takes him to the fair, and things improve and the string of bad luck has ended. I think there is a message that adults could benefit from as well. A good book to start a classroom discussion.

D.W. Says Please and Thank You by Marc Brown

Arthur dares his little sister D.W. to be perfect for one whole day. Being perfect also means, using lots of good manner, after looking perfect first of course. D.W. cleans her room, says good-bye, hello, excuse me, and does NOT use mean words, closes her mouth when chewing, not whining and complaining, etc. At the end of the day D. W. realizes that manners "give you magical powers and people treat you like a big kid!" Although this book came out in 2006, we often forget about the power of series books. Even kids that may THINK they have outgrown an old favorite, like Arthur, can learn alot when exposed to them as BIG kids!

Amelia Bedelia's First Field Trip by Herman Parish

Amelia is very excited because her class is headed to Fairview Farm!! Mr. and Mrs. Dinkins show Amelia and her class how to collect eggs, milk cows, and plant seeds. Along the way Amelia learns about Mrs. Dinkin's green thumb and how to NOT toss a salad. Typical Amelia with her literal intreptation of things, adding of course to her appeal and overall humor of the book.
