Soup for One by Ethan Long

Soup for a fly....or two....now three....and four....and on and on.  Endearing "bugs" join the soup feast until an unwelcomed guest sends all the bugs flying.  But in the end it is a spider that wins the soup.  Ethan Long creates another fun, simple book that kids will enjoy.

Ten Little Caterpillars by Bill Martin Jr.

At first glance, this book appears to be a simple counting book. However this book is PACKED with great information. Each page another caterpillar appears but none of the caterpillars are the same KIND! Along the way the different wildlife is identified. Once you get to the end you will find all 10 caterpillars, identified with their name, what they eat, and what they look like as a butterfly. Definitely a book that will be added to our butterfly book collection at school (3rd grade does a butterfly unit at the beginning of the year). Great book for young children working on numbers and counting, as well as older students learning about the life cycle of a caterpillar/butterfly.

Ten Little Beasties by Rebecca and Ed Emberley

Simple and to the point. Count up to 10 with the beasties....and then back down! I like books that have music to go with them and this father/daughter duo has created other books with music together (If You're A Monster and You Know It and There Was An Old Monster) which I have really enjoyed (and so has my classes I have shared them with).

Dinosaur Dig by Penny Dale

Dinosaurs + big machines + noises = DINOSAUR DIG!!

Count the dinosaurs as they get to work on the construction site using diggers, dump trucks, cranes, and other big machines of all shapes and sizes. What could they be building? With each page a new dinosaur is introduced as they work to construct something for all the dinos to enjoy. Great counting book, especially for those dino loving preschoolers! Very interesting details in the illustrations of the life like dinosaurs.

Dog Number 1 by Ami Rubinger

Meet some new furry friends and count to 10! From Rover to Missy to my favorite, number 10, Spike, each dog has a personality revealed through rhyme. I am one of Rubinger's biggest fans because her books are interactive! The reader finishes each sentence.

"I'm different and that's just great. Call me Missy. I'm dog number..."

At this point Adam yells, "Eight!!!"

One Weighs a Ton by Salina Yoon

One Weighs a Ton is an animal based lift the flaps and touch-and-feels book takes a news spin on counting. "One weighs a ton..." and on the opposite side is the number one, that was created looking like at of an elephant. Lifting the flap will reveal an elephant with an area of the ear to touch and a question and answer about elephants. Little kids will love the animals featured (10 total) as well as a learn some nonfiction facts as well. Very interactive!

10 Little Penguins by Kate Toms

Adam and I came across this cute book this am at 1/2 Price Books. I love the illustrations - so cute! When I find a book about counting that I can use at home and potentially at school, I like to grab it!....did not hurt that their prices are reasonable! The book starts with 10 penguins and on each page, one goes off for one reason or another.
"7 busy penguins each bake a tasty cake...1 penguin eats too fast and now has a tummy ache!"
The cupcakes are adorable and kids could try to make their own cupcake using lots of different "scrap" materials around the house.
Kids will love the silly penguins.
